Black Friday facts

Have you ever wondered where the term Black Friday came from? Every shop does big discount campaigns, but why?

Black Friday comes from the United States and is always the Friday after Thanks Giving. This day has developed into one of the busiest shopping days of the year internationally, but also here in Germany.

Many believe that the term "Black Friday" comes from the notion that businesses operate at a financial loss or are "in the red" until the day before Thanksgiving, and only then reach "black numbers" through promotions such as Black Friday. However, this is not true.

To date, the meaning is not 100% clear. However, there are some understandable theories. We would like to introduce them to you here.

The first Black Friday, occurred in 1869 when financier Jay Gould and railroad entrepreneur James Fisk attempted to corner the gold market, eventually leading to a financial panic and market collapse. A little over 60 years later, on October 29, 1929, another stock market crash, known as Black Tuesday, marked the beginning of the greatest economic crisis of all time.

In the 1950s, factory managers began referring to the Friday after Thanksgiving as Black Friday because so many of their workers falsely called in sick, thus extending the holiday weekend.

About 10 years later, Philadelphia traffic cops referred to the day after Thanksgiving as "Black Friday" because they had to work 12-hour shifts in heavy traffic. Visitors flocked to the city to do their Christmas shopping, and sometimes this popular shopping day coincided with the annual Army-Navy football game. The term caught on with buyers and dealers in Philadelphia and from there spread nationwide across the United States.

The Black Friday myth as we know it today, emerged in the 1980s. While the terms "black" and "red" are used in business to describe wins and losses, this explanation for one of the busiest shopping days of the year didn't come about until the 1980s.

You see, there were many events that led to Black Friday as we know it today.

Of course, we at Inkster are happy if you stop by our temporary tattoos and get inspired by our designs. Have fun shopping!
